About this book

A Treatise on Painting is by Leonardo da Vinci, faithfully translated from the original Italian by John Francis Rigaud and, as the title page says, now first digested under proper heads. It is illustrated with twenty-three copper-plates and other figures, and a new life of the author by John Sidney Hawkins is prefixed. The title page is dated 1802, London.

The table of contents lists numbered chapters under headings such as Aerial Perspective and Landscape. Titles include Of the Colour of Mountains, How to paint the distant Part of a Landscape, Why Faces appear dark at a Distance, Of Towns and other Buildings seen through a Fog in the Morning or Evening, and Of the Green of the Country. The chapter numbers run past 320, and footnotes cross-refer to other chapters of the treatise.
