About this book
The title page describes the work as containing an account of the classical history, uses, characters, development, structure, nutritious properties, modes of cooking and preserving of the esculent funguses of England. The preface to the second edition says that Dr. Badham died since the first publication of the work, and that it was wished the text should be altered as little as possible and the price of the book materially lessened. The text reckons the commercial value of fresh Funguses at little less than £2000 a year, at the rate of six baiocchi, or threepence per pound.
Under Etymologies, the text says the Greeks used familiarly to designate certain, but indefinite species of funguses by the word μύκης. A description says the flesh of the pileus is white and cottony, that of the stalk fibrous and somewhat brittle, with the whole plant turning to a rufous-orange when bruised. The text says that the total quantity of moisture absorbed by funguses, during development and growth, is great.
