About this book
A Vanished Arcadia, subtitled Being Some Account of the Jesuits in Paraguay 1607-1767, is by R. B. Cunninghame Graham. The dedication says the Jesuits in Paraguay are still remembered, fitfully, by a few faithful, when the Angelus wakes recollection in the Indians' hearts. In the preface the author says he is painfully aware that neither his calling nor election in this matter are the least sure.
A passage names Antequera as the most turbulent of all the Governors of Paraguay, and says that in 1731 an order came from Madrid to execute him. A governor sends off an expedition against the Guaycurús, with a priest joined to require them to become Christians and to acknowledge the King of Spain.
