About this book
Grammar lessons become a test of spiritual discipline in Ignatius of Loyola's account of his life. At Barcelona, religious thoughts interrupt his efforts to memorize, and he brings the difficulty to his teacher before promising sustained attention to his studies. Later, at Alcala, his philosophical reading, reliance on alms and teaching of Christian doctrine place his private convictions in a wider social setting.
Dictated to Father Gonzalez and narrated in the third person, the autobiography records the experiences of the founder of the Society of Jesus. Gonzalez's preface describes the conversations, interruptions and note-taking through which the account was preserved. Alongside spiritual reflection, the excerpts show practical concerns: food, lodging, education and assistance to poor people. For readers interested in Christian biography or early modern religious life, these details connect a saint's inward concerns with the daily arrangements and personal relationships that shaped his activities.
