About this book
The Gist of Japan, with the subtitle The Islands, Their People, and Missions, is by R. B. Peery. The preface says nothing, to the writer’s knowledge, has yet been published which attempts to give a full treatment of mission work in Japan. The text says that in Japan there is so excessive an amount of moisture in the atmosphere that it makes the heat exceedingly depressing. The text says the proportion of ozone in the atmosphere of Japan is only about one third as great as that in the atmosphere of most Western countries.
The text says a cathedral was begun in 1884 and completed in 1891, and calls it a magnificent building, by far the finest ecclesiastical structure in Japan. The text says the development of music in the Greek Church of Japan has been marvelous. A chapter headed The Outlook says it is exceedingly difficult to form a reliable conjecture concerning the future state of Christianity in Japan.
