About this book
A Voyage Round the World by Louis-Antoine de Bougainville records the appearance of scurvy among eight or ten members of the crew during continual rain. Each sailor receives a daily pint of lemonade prepared with a powder used extensively during the voyage. The account describes sea water deprived of salt by a distilling apparatus and employed in broth and in boiling meat and legumes. The supply of water obtained during the long run is described as a very great resource.
The account calls Batavia the emporium or staple of all the productions of the Moluccas. The whole crop of spices is carried to Batavia, and ships are annually loaded with the amount necessary for consumption in Europe, while the remainder is burnt.
