About this book

Lawrence's failing health prompts a doctor to recommend a warmer country, while Mrs Dunn argues anxiously over his care. Around the sick boy stand two very different adults: the brisk solicitor Mr Burne and the distracted Professor Preston. George Manville Fenn gives this adventure novel a comic domestic beginning before moving into the dangerous terrain of travel in Turkey.

In the mountains, the travellers depend on Yussuf's judgement as armed outlaws threaten their party. One episode finds him cutting an injured man's bonds, helping to arrange a guarded camp and weighing the risk of an ambush. Horses, narrow ravines and practical decisions give the adventure its immediate texture. Alongside the danger runs the humour of Mr Burne's habits and outspoken remarks. The appeal lies in the contrast between these distinctive companions and the demands of keeping one another safe in unfamiliar surroundings.
