About this book

Enormous fields of ice surround a whaling ship whose crew fears that the return passage will close. The opening tale takes the form of medical student John M'Alister Ray's journal, recording shortages of food and mounting resentment aboard the vessel. Captain Nicholas Craigie hopes to reach whales farther north, but his sudden shifts between tenderness and fury trouble the young observer. Reports of cries following the ship add another uncertainty to the dangers of the sea.

Published in 1890, Arthur Conan Doyle's collection brings together short stories with an interest in peril, strange behaviour and suspense. A later passage follows a narrator and Dick Merton into a ship's smoking room, where two men play cards while making unsettling remarks about the vessel's future. Close attention to speech and small gestures lets readers share the narrator's effort to understand a threat. Readers of maritime fiction can find both the practical pressures of shipboard life and the unease created by difficult companions.
