About this book
Abracadabra & Other Satires is by John Galsworthy. A piece titled Reverie of a Sportsman has its speaker set out one morning in late August, with some potted grouse sandwiches in one pocket and a magazine in the other, for a tramp toward Causdon. In one scene a capercailzie, a snipe and a lark each speak of someone as a “Ferocious brute,” and a cougar asks the others whether they shall go for him.
In another scene a room with a bare floor holds little save a camp-bed and chest of drawers with jug and basin, and a large bird-cage on the wall hangs wide open. A speaker asks his listener to imagine a blue sea, a half-circle of grass with a low wall, and five traps, one of which opens to let a little dazed grey bird emerge and fly perhaps six yards.
