About this book

A quiet evening beside the fire breaks apart when Keith Darrant's brother arrives with news of a killing. Keith, accustomed to weighing arguments and evidence in court, now faces trouble within his own family. His wish for firm decisions meets Laurence's distress and dependence, giving the opening of John Galsworthy's 1919 collection a sharp contrast between professional judgment and personal loyalty.

The five stories include The First and Last, A Stoic, The Apple Tree, The Juryman, and Indian Summer of a Forsyte. English family life and social customs provide their setting and subject. In another scene, an elderly man clings to his independence while his daughter and servant try to curb his drinking. Rooms, clothing, small gestures, and private thoughts carry much of the tension. Readers interested in fiction about conscience, authority, and the friction of family relationships will find these concerns expressed through closely observed encounters.
