About this book
Orlóff and His Wife is subtitled Tales of the Barefoot Brigade and is credited to Maksim Gorky. The contents list names, among others, Orlóff and His Wife, Konováloff, The Khan and His Son and Men with Pasts. Under the heading Orlóff and His Wife, the text says that almost every Saturday, just before the All-Night Vigil Service, the vehement shrieks of a woman broke forth from two windows in the cellar of merchant Petúnnikoff's old and filthy house.
Gríshka whispers that life is a magnificent hard-labor prison, unable to express what he so painfully felt, and Matréna, through sweet tears, suggests moving into another lodging, understanding his words literally. Anger flashes up within Ippolít Sergyéevitch, who reiterates to himself, gritting his teeth, that he is being played with.
