About this book

Summer flowers and a piano waltz greet Edward Pierson as he returns from Tintern Abbey to his brother's home beside the Wye. A London clergyman taking a holiday during the First World War, he finds his daughter Noel dancing with the young officer Cyril Morland. Music, remembered family happiness and uncertainty about his daughter's growing independence occupy his thoughts. John Galsworthy establishes the novel's concerns through this quiet encounter between a devoted father and a changing younger generation.

A later winter scene gives the household a different purpose. Thirza welcomes Noel, prepares a cheerful room and offers practical kindness as the girl faces a difficult personal situation. Beyond the house, trees are being cut for trench supports. These domestic details place affection and private judgment within the demands of wartime life. Readers interested in family relationships and religious conviction will find a story attentive to the gap between settled beliefs and immediate human needs.
