About this book

At the Denes, Lady Lisle watches over her nephew Sydney Smithers with an affection that leaves plenty of room for self-deception. She worries about his manners, his future title and his uncle's friendships, while Sydney answers her earnest advice with schoolboy slang and private jokes. Nearby Tilborough, with its racing crowds and sporting society, represents everything she wants her household to avoid.

George Manville Fenn builds this British novel from brisk exchanges about family duty, social standing and respectable appearances. The racing world has its own family complications, including a trainer who objects to his daughter's secret marriage to Syd. Breakfast lectures and arguments over courtship give the story a comic edge, with money and connections repeatedly entering the conversation. Readers interested in social comedy can follow the friction between Lady Lisle's moral certainty and the less orderly lives around her.
