Afghans, by Spool Cotton Co., is Afghan Book No. 289, with a copyright of 1952. The text urges readers to add an afghan to their family possessions, saying that almost before you finish the last stitch, every member of the household, young and old alike, will be clamoring to use it. A pattern's directions give a gauge, each motif measuring 4 inches square, and say to start at center with Bittersweet, ch 5, and join with sl st to form ring.

Directions in the text say to sew squares together neatly on wrong side, making 9 rows of 12 motifs. Round instructions say to attach Emerald Green to any half dc for the 5th rnd and Paddy Green to the first sp of any shell for the 6th rnd. Directions in the text say, for the 3rd rnd, to attach Black to same place as sl st.
