About this book
After Life in Roman Paganism contrasts modern conceptions of immortality with the conception found in the religion of the Roman Empire. The discussion says that immortality for the ancients was conditional, potentially neither perpetual nor something that belonged to all men. The account of the mysteries describes participation in ritual banquets as their most efficacious means of communicating with the godhead.
The account of sacred meals describes wine as the drink of immortality, credited with bodily vigour, mental wisdom and strength against evil spirits and death. The discussion of epitaphs and ordinary language records a current belief that each person was born under a good or evil star.
