About this book
Atheism in Pagan Antiquity, by A. B. Drachmann, is described in its preface as a treatise that originally appeared in Danish as a University publication. The text calls it evident that Athens had arrived at the point of view that the theoretical denial of the gods might be tolerated, whereas the law, of course, continued to protect public worship. The text says Rome did not possess, as Athens did, a general statute against religious offences, and that no example is known from Rome of action taken against theoretical denial of the gods.
The text says the work of Polybius has a certain interest on another point, and that he operates as a rule with an idea which he calls Tyche. The text calls the word Tyche untranslatable when used in this way, and something between chance, fortune and fate. The contents list chapters, notes and an index.
