About this book

The preface to William O. Stoddard's Ahead of the Army offers a few facts so that no one will suspect exaggeration in the pictures of Mexican affairs in the old time presented by Señor Carfora: from independence in 1821 to 1884 nearly every change of government in the Republic of Mexico came with violence, and there have been fifty-five Presidents, with two emperors and one regency to be added to that list.

One passage puts a boy named Ned aboard the Goshawk, under Captain Kemp, with talk of a dangerous cargo in the hold and the chance of capture by American ships of war on the way to Vera Cruz. Chapter II, "The Race of the Goshawk," turns to the Gulf of Mexico at night and an American fort on the Texas side of the Rio Grande, where Mexican artillery flashes in the dark. Elsewhere a speaker says the insurance money for the loss of the Goshawk has been paid and that his firm has a contract to furnish supplies for the army.
