About this book

The Boy with the U. S. Fisheries is by Francis Rolt-Wheeler and carries fifty-one illustrations, mostly from United States government bureaus. In the preface the author writes that treasure-ships richer than any galleon on the Spanish Main still sail today, and that they are called fishing smacks.

In one scene an old gunner named Hank raises a harpoon gun, waits, and fires as the whale is about to dive. The line runs out fast while Scotty calls the fathoms: fifty, sixty, seventy. Captioned photographs show a harpoon gun being loaded and a finback whale struck at the instant of discharge. In another passage Colin is so eager on reaching Washington that he wants to go to the Bureau of Fisheries before he has even been to the hotel. In a talk about crabs, a soft-shell crab is said to be the same species as the blue crab, worth four or five times as much in the market.
