About this book

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) wrote out this early version of his famous Alice story by hand, and the book reproduces that manuscript in print with thirty-seven illustrations by the author himself. It was later developed into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

On a hot afternoon a bored girl sitting beside her sister notices a white rabbit with a watch in its waistcoat pocket and hurries after it down a rabbit-hole. She falls past cupboards, shelves and maps, finds a tiny golden key, a door eighteen inches high and a bottle labelled DRINK ME, and soon shrinks to ten inches.

Four chapters carry her on, from the pool of tears and a caterpillar's advice to the Queen's croquet-ground and the Mock Turtle's story. Reading it gives a look at the tale in its first, shorter form.
