About this book
A cup of coffee connects botany, trade and machinery in William H. Ukers's reference work, published in 1922. His preface describes research in coffee-producing countries, libraries and museums, with specialist help on chemistry and plant structure. Alongside the historical account, readers find a chronology, a table of coffee varieties and an extensive bibliography. The book treats a familiar drink as a subject with its own industrial and cultural history.
The account of developments around 1900 gives that history a practical texture: vacuum cans, soluble coffee, electric grinders and gas-fired roasters appear beside changing prices and Brazilian crop totals. Packaging inventions matter here as much as the beans themselves. Readers interested in food history or the origins of everyday equipment can follow these dated records to see how commerce and invention shaped the coffee business.
