About this book
Amateur Gardencraft is subtitled a book for the home-maker and garden lover, by Eben E. Rexford, with 34 illustrations. It was issued in Philadelphia and London in 1912. The foreword holds that the home which gives its owner most pleasure is largely the result of personal effort.
The text is practical advice in plain terms. One passage deals with a house lot with building material scattered about and uneven ground: clear away the rubbish first, fill hollows with brick and stone rather than wood, and give the lot a slight slope away from the walls. Another passage covers roses, with Hybrid Perpetuals among the kinds named, and notes that flowers are borne only on new growth. A third explains how to lift a plant with soil clinging to its roots, water it well beforehand and mulch it after planting.
