Thomas Warton's A History of English Poetry : an Unpublished Continuation is edited, with an introduction, by Rodney M. Baine. A discussion in the book says it may seem damaging that Warton failed to mention more sonnet collections than he discussed. Joseph Ritson, in 1802, listed in his Bibliographia Poetica the sonnet collections of Barnaby Barnes, Thomas Lodge, William Percy, and John Soowthern.
The text calls Sir Philip Sidney's Astrophel and Stella a collection which certainly did not need to avoid censure. The notes to the text say that Warton's notes, which in the manuscript are designated by letters or symbols, have been numbered, and that brackets enclose all the editor's corrections, expansions, and comments.
