About this book

American Literary Masters is a book by Leon H. Vincent. The preface says the nineteen men of letters whose work is reviewed in the volume represent an important half-century of our national literary life. The preface says no author is included whose reputation does not rest, in part, on some notable book published before 1860.

A section headed Evangeline, Hiawatha, Miles Standish, Tales of a Wayside Inn says Evangeline and Hiawatha mark the climax of Longfellow’s contemporary popularity and may be regarded as the principal bulwarks of his fame. A section headed The Writer says that, unless as some maintain Whitman got the suggestion of a rhapsodical form from the once famous Poems of Ossian, he may be said to have invented his own ‘verse.’ A section headed His Life says Poe was of Irish extraction and that his great-grandfather, John Poe, came to America about 1745 and settled near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
