About this book

Familiar Studies of Men and Books is by Robert Louis Stevenson, and the volume is dedicated in love and gratitude to Thomas Stevenson, civil engineer, by his son the author. The preface says these studies are collected from the monthly press, and that nine worthies have been brought together from many different ages and countries. An entry headed Charles of Orleans says that perhaps the writer has done scanty justice to the charm of the old Duke’s verses, and certainly he is too much treated as a fool.

One study says it is as much the story of a heroic people as that of a heroic man, and that it is not enough to remember Yoshida; we must not forget the common soldier. One heading in the book reads FRANÇOIS VILLON, STUDENT, POET, AND HOUSEBREAKER. An entry headed Knox says that Knox, the second in order of interest among the reformers, lies dead and buried in the works of the learned and unreadable M‘Crie.
