About this book
Life of John Keats is Sidney Colvin's book on the poet, with the title page reading John Keats, His Life and Poetry, His Friends, Critics and After-Fame, 1917. In the preface the author says there is not yet one book giving a full and connected account of Keats's life and poetry together, and mentions that he wrote the volume on Keats for a series of short studies thirty years before.
One passage says that a Spenser fever took hold of Keats and with it a longing to be a poet, and names William Browne of Tavistock and Michael Drayton among the poets whose work he knew. Another lists the new poetry that appeared in his childhood, school days and apprenticeship, among them the Lyrical Ballads, Scott's romantic lays and Byron's Childe Harold. A description of a painting by Claude is linked to the scene on the Grecian Urn. One passage names Tennyson and Edward FitzGerald as admirers of Keats.
