About this book
The Function of the Poet, and Other Essays is a volume of essays by James Russell Lowell. The preface says that "Lowell himself felt that his true calling was in critical work rather than in poetry." The preface names "The Vision of Sir Launfal," "The Biglow Papers," and "The Commemoration Ode" as enough to make the reputation of any poet.
One passage on poets says that the poet as the "seer" became secondary to the "maker." Another piece says that any fault in Mr. James’s style, "which is generally of conspicuous elegance," would be his occasional choice of a French word or phrase.
