About this book

Along the Euphrates, ruined walls and old waterways lead Gertrude Lowthian Bell to connect the landscape with the lives of its present inhabitants. Her 1911 travel account follows five months in the Middle East, combining observations of ancient sites with conversations and encounters along the route. The preface places these travels within a period of uncertain constitutional change in the Ottoman Empire, when ideas of liberty were entering discussion in desert camps.

Bell's attention moves easily from the remains of earlier empires to the practical difficulties of visiting a building. In Baghdad, her request to inspect the palace of the khalifs brings her into a military office and then to a commandant's house, where lions are kept on the roof. Such episodes give the historical observations a personal voice. Readers interested in archaeology, Ottoman politics or travel writing can follow how Bell brings material remains and everyday exchanges into the same account.
