About this book
Gertrude Lowthian Bell's book, subtitled A Study in Early Mohammadan Architecture, was printed at Oxford in 1914. Her preface says she has tried to bring together the known materials on the earliest phases of that architecture. The front matter lists a table of contents, a subject index, an index of names and a list of illustrations.
The plates are labelled by courts, rooms, doors and gateways of the palace at Ukhaidir, with further views of Qsair, Mudjdah, Atshan and the minaret at Tauq. One passage describes Roman camps and forts on the frontier, and notes that on the Syrian frontier they were built of solid stone from the first. It mentions Masada and the time of Vespasian. Footnotes refer to Dieulafoy, to Flandin and Coste, and to Koldewey's work on Babylon.
