About this book
Edward William Lane's Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians comes with a transcriber's note explaining that the footnotes are collected at the end and that musical scores appear as images, with the lyrics given after each line.
One passage gives a Khateeb's exhortation for the new year and the month of El-Moharram, including the advice to fast on the ninth and tenth days. The Khateeb then sits and prays privately, each member of the congregation offers a private petition, and the Muballighs say "Ameen! Ameen!" Another passage describes jugglers in Cairo called Keeyem, one of whom works with an assistant who lays twenty-nine small pieces of stone on the ground and asks a spectator to hide a coin under one of them. Another describes the cultivated land bordering the Nile, with palm groves, villages and many canals.
