About this book
Palace and Hovel, or Phases of London Life, is described as being personal observations of an American in London, by day and night. The full title promises illustrations of the manners, social customs, and modes of living of the rich and the reckless, the destitute and the depraved, in the metropolis of Great Britain. The text says the vaults in the London docks cover an area of eighteen acres and afford accommodation for eighty thousand pipes of wine. Passes called tasting permits give the visitor the privilege to ask an attendant for a sample of any wine, or wines and liquors that he may choose to taste.
The writer noticed that the majority of the parliamentary reporters in the Gallery were considerably advanced in age. The text describes a trap door that opens and discloses a fashionably-dressed and good-looking young fellow, with a police officer on each side.
