About this book
The Icknield Way is by Edward Thomas. A chapter headed Second Day, Newmarket to Odsey, by Ickleton and Royston, has the writer paying two shillings and setting out at six o'clock the next morning. The writer says that, so far as is known, the Icknield Way, which certainly went through Newmarket, is the central street and London road.
Among others, Thrift Hill, Gallows Hill, Crouch Hill and Pott’s Hill are named as the gentlest of chalk hills crested with trees, and at their highest points there were villages like Therfield, Kelshall, Sandon and Wallington. A home-returning carter tells the writer that the first part of the road as far as the crossing was Baits or Bates Lane. Ermine Street passed through Wanborough Nythe at the west end of the Icknield Way from East Anglia and went north-west to Cirencester.
