About this book

At a Rochester polling place in November 1872, Susan B. Anthony and other women claimed the right to vote under the Fourteenth Amendment. This anonymous collection follows the legal dispute that grew from their ballots and from the election inspectors' decision to receive them. Its contents bring together indictments, courtroom arguments, judicial opinions and speeches, preserving the competing arguments over citizenship and voting rights.

The excerpts show lawyers debating whether a sincere belief in the right to vote could answer a criminal charge. They also show witnesses questioned about registration lists, ballot records and the tickets the women cast. Alongside Anthony's case, the proceedings concerning Beverly W. Jones, Edwin T. Marsh and William B. Hall reveal the responsibilities placed on officials at the polls.
