About this book

Changes in religious teaching need not break its connection with earlier belief, John Henry Newman argues in this study of Christian doctrine. He approaches Catholic teaching through the history of ideas, examining how beliefs become more fully expressed over time. The contents move from general principles to specific examples, including infant baptism, the New Testament canon and papal authority. His 1878 preface explains why apparent inconsistencies in church history require an account of development.

Newman sets out seven tests for separating valid growth from corruption, among them continuity of principles and the preservation of an idea's character. In the historical discussion, quotations from ancient critics show how religious duties and Christian belief appeared to outsiders. Readers studying theology or intellectual history can examine both his proposed tests and the evidence used to apply them. Definitions, historical comparisons and extended quotations make this a sustained argument for continuity within change.
