About this book
An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent is by John Henry Newman, of the Oratory. The contents list Part I as Assent and Apprehension and Part II as Assent and Inference, and a chapter on Notional and Real Assent. The text says memory consists in a present imagination of things that are past, and that the poet calls memory the mind's eye.
The writer mentions the idea, which has possessed certain philosophers, ancient and modern, that miracles are an infringement and disfigurement of the beautiful order of nature. The writer also names the persuasion, common among political and literary men, that the Catholic Church is inconsistent with the true interests of the human race. Celsus is quoted as saying in mockery that an educated man should keep clear of Christians, who want no men of wisdom, no men of sense.
