About this book

A rainy trip to the station brings Polly Milton into a household where appearances can outweigh consideration. Fanny wants to preserve her hairstyle, while her brother Tom resents being sent alone to meet their visitor. Polly's friendly greeting and thanks begin to soften his reluctance. Louisa May Alcott builds this domestic novel around the small acts that reveal character, placing its friendships and family tensions against nineteenth-century Boston life.

The story later moves forward several years, as Alcott explains in her preface. A scene involving Tom and his younger sister Maud shows how affection can be taken for granted: Maud admires her brother but longs for attention and respect. The comfort she finds at Polly's home gives her an example of everyday care. Written for young readers, the novel offers a study of manners, sibling relationships and the effort needed to make a home welcoming.
