About this book
A new baby gives Susy and Prudy plenty to celebrate, and plenty to misunderstand. Their youngest sister, Alice Barrow, arrives in the Parlin household to tears of happiness, anxious advice and Prudy's enthusiastic attempts to make her open her eyes. Sophie May follows these sisters through family scenes in which a child's good intentions can quickly become a source of trouble. Alice's lively dimples eventually earn her the name Dotty Dimple, despite her father's objection to pet names.
The children's speech carries much of the humor, especially when Prudy takes an adult's expression literally or Susy adopts the manner of a small teacher. A later episode concerning Susy's pony, Wings, brings kindness toward animals into the family's lessons about conduct. This children's novel offers a close view of sibling affection, childish pride and the patient guidance of grownups, with everyday mishaps treated as occasions for learning.
