About this book

A bedroom crowded with clothes, books, tools and unfinished tasks gives an early measure of Gypsy Breynton's restless energy. Her brother Tom turns the disorder into an elaborate prank, dressing a broom and chair with her belongings and adding a grandly lettered placard. Gypsy greets the spectacle with laughter. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps builds this children's novel around an active girl whose outdoor pleasures and family exchanges sit alongside lessons in thoughtfulness and responsibility.

Her generosity comes into focus when she visits Mrs. Littlejohn, an older woman suffering from a broken ankle. Alarmed by the woman's account of hunger and neglect, Gypsy offers food and her own savings, then hurries home to enlist her mother. The mixture of sibling teasing, country life and eager attempts to help gives readers a concrete picture of childhood shaped by both freedom and everyday obligations.
