A Survey of Russian Literature, with Selections is by Isabel F. Hapgood, who is named on the title page as the author of Russian Rambles and The Epic Songs of Russia. A transcriber's note says the accents on Russian names mark the stressed syllable and that footnotes have been moved to the ends of chapters. The first heading in the contents is The Ancient Period.
One passage quotes old songs about grain, one with the refrain Glory! and another sung at the New-Year, in which boys go from house to house scattering grain, chiefly oats, and it explains that the New-Year fell on March 1st in Russia until 1348. Another passage names Gogol's Dead Souls, his Tales from a Farm-house Near Dikanka, Mirgorod and the comedy The Inspector, and says Pushkin was one of his earliest and most ardent admirers. Vsevolod Garshin is also introduced by name.
