About this book
Ancient Rome: The Lives of Great Men is told by Mary Agnes Hamilton. The contents list names such as Brutus and Tarquin, Lucretia, Mucius, Cloelia and Regulus, among others. Tarquin says nothing to a messenger and, as he walks, strikes off with his staff the heads of the tallest poppies, one after another, without saying a word.
Sextus understands his father's action, which the messenger described to him. Collatinus and Brutus swear a great oath to drive the house of Tarquin from Rome and to allow no king to rule over the free people of the city. The text says the real cause of the civil war lay much deeper than the work of any single man or group of men, and that in the main it was the fact that while Rome had grown into a new world, the old system of government remained.
