About this book
Pompeii, Its Life and Art is by August Mau. One passage describes the city's setting in the plain of the Sarno: over the centuries the shore line has moved away from the town, so the sea is now about a mile and a quarter from the nearest point of the city, where in antiquity it was less than a third of a mile. The same passage describes a mild, short winter, long spring and autumn, and a sea breeze that reaches the city after the heat of a summer morning.
Another passage looks at the tablinum, the room at the rear of the atrium, and cites Varro on how people ate by the hearth in winter and out of doors in summer. The notes for the chapter on the Small Theatre take up excavation, remains, decoration and inscriptions, and give references to the literature.
