About this book
The contents list an introduction, a glance at the Congress, the arrival of sovereigns and a first night in Vienna. A chapter heading lists the Prince de Ligne, his wit and urbanity, a masked ball and a rout, with sovereigns in dominos. A prince replies that everything will depend upon guarantees for maintaining Polish nationality and that a vanquished people will never resign itself to humiliation.
A personal recollection describes calls on business people whose addresses the narrator had been given, some absent and others pretending to have forgotten the visitors. The narrator recalls receiving some sympathy from the servant Marie, who sought to dispel the dejection plainly visible on the narrator’s face.
