About this book
Arranged animal by animal, from monkeys, bats and hedgehogs through dogs, lions, elephants, horses and camels to sheep and oxen, this 1852 collection gathers true stories of how mammals behave around people. The author, who earlier wrote as Mrs. T. E. Bowdich, drew on travellers' accounts, stories from friends and her years near the Gaboon River in West Africa, and the original edition carried pictures by Harrison Weir.
The first chapter turns on her change of heart about monkeys, after Jack, the ship cook's mischievous pet, leapt onto her shoulders during a calm at sea and curled up in her lap. Later chapters tell of a lion in a Paris menagerie that refused food while its keeper was ill, a sergeant greeted by a lion he had not seen in three years, and a lion in New Orleans that guarded a bear lowered into its cage.
Written partly for young readers and city dwellers with no chance to watch animals themselves, it mixes natural history with plain storytelling. Some hunting episodes are frank about wounds, and a few remarks carry the attitudes of their day, but the author's fondness for animals is clear throughout.
