About this book

Reports of unusual animals share space with mermaid stories and unicorn lore in John Timbs's 1869 natural history collection. The introductory chapter traces the keeping of animals in royal menageries and zoological gardens, including the Tower of London. Across the contents, animal bodies and behaviour supply subjects as varied as bats' wings, birds' nests, penguins and the changing colours of chameleons. The book gathers accounts from naturalists, travellers and older authorities.

Toucans receive particularly detailed attention. Timbs brings together descriptions of their bills, forest feeding and tree hollows, alongside observations of birds kept in England. Differences between the reports make the process of collecting animal knowledge part of the interest. Readers can explore how a nineteenth-century writer combined close observation, reported experience and inherited belief when explaining the animal world.
