About this book
On a train bound for the country, Philippa Harford reflects on a life that has left her sociable in manner but cautious about intimacy. Her father's diplomatic work took the family abroad, and his death cost her the companionship she valued most. Her mother has recently married again. An earlier disappointment in a man's sincerity has deepened Philippa's reserve, while the round of social pleasures leaves her wishing for something more useful to do.
Mrs. Hubert Barclay develops this romance through the care Philippa gives Francis Heathcote during his recovery from illness and an accident. As his strength returns, their hours together become increasingly important to her. He speaks of confused memories, and she tries to keep their conversations from distressing subjects. Embroidery beside his sofa and small exchanges of concern give the relationship its everyday texture.
