About this book

The boundary between verse and prose gives Walter Pater a starting point for examining literary art. His opening essay treats style as a way of expressing a writer's particular perception of the world, with truth and precision at the centre of that work. Examples drawn from historians, poets and prose writers show how thought, feeling and form act together. The collection also turns to Wordsworth, Coleridge, Charles Lamb, Shakespeare and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

In the essay on Sir Thomas Browne, questions of style meet questions of belief. Pater considers the scientific curiosity and religious imagination behind Religio Medici, alongside its circulation in manuscript, a disputed printed edition and Kenelm Digby's response. These essays offer readers interested in criticism a close examination of how individual minds shape writing. They are also useful for thinking about the choices that give a sentence its distinctive character.

About the author

Walter Pater

Walter Pater (1839 to 1894) was an English essayist and critic whose writing on art and the Renaissance made him a founding figure of the Aesthetic movement. An Oxford don, his call to burn "with a hard, gemlike flame" strongly influenced Oscar Wilde and a generation of writers.
