About this book
Egoists, A Book of Supermen contains studies whose listed subjects include Stendhal, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Anatole France, Huysmans, Barrès and Nietzsche. The title page announces a portrait of Stendhal, an unpublished letter of Flaubert and an original proof page of Madame Bovary. The study of Stendhal records his statement to Romain Colomb that he required new ideas every day as a steamboat requires coal.
The account of Stendhal says that he spoke English but wrote it imperfectly, and spoke Italian excellently because of his long residence in Italy. The discussion of Ibsen calls John Gabriel Borkman another monument to his vigour and genius, written at an age when most poets show declining power.
