About this book
The title presents Apu Ollantay as a drama of the time of the Incas, and the contents list an introduction alongside acts and scenes. The introduction says that the Incas cultivated drama and that dramatic performances were enacted before them. The introduction calls Zegarra a very severe and often unfair critic of his predecessors, while describing his work as exceedingly valuable.
The discussion of translation acknowledges Zegarra's objection that attempts to translate line for line fail to convey a proper idea of the original drama. A scene set in a wild place in the mountains gives a distant view of Ollantay-tampu and brings in Rumi-ñaui, torn, ragged, covered with blood and accompanied by two attendants.
