About this book
The title page gives the subtitle as an essay in deciphering prehistory from megalithic monuments, earthworks, customs, coins, place-names and faerie superstitions, by Harold Bayley. A transcriber's note says that most spelling variants are kept, that figures have been moved near the paragraphs they illustrate, and that titles for five appendices were added to the contents.
The text carries numbered footnotes citing sources such as Windle, Hearnshaw and Hawkins, along with a story about a fourteenth century legend-monger asked by monks for the life of a saint. Others take up the forms of 'pigeon' recorded in the New English Dictionary, a penny said to be named from the 'pen' or head on it, and Pan as a symbol of the universe. Some pages carry figure captions, among them a probable restoration of a dagger with a mammoth handle.
