About this book
Divine rivalries, creation legends and the history of trading routes meet in Donald A. Mackenzie's account of ancient Mesopotamia. Chapters introduce Tammuz and Ishtar, the heroes Etana and Gilgamesh, flood traditions and beliefs about the stars. Accounts of Babylonian buildings, laws and customs place these stories beside the lives and institutions of the societies that preserved them. The book combines a study of religion with a historical narrative rather than treating each legend as an isolated tale.
Mackenzie compares dragon stories and magical practices from different cultures, asking how shared beliefs took on local meanings. His historical passages also turn to royal correspondence: letters reveal the hazards facing messengers, while forts and wells serve merchants on contested routes. Published in 1915, this illustrated study offers readers material on ancient gods and empires, together with an example of the comparative methods and assumptions used by a writer of that period.
