About this book
Buildings become evidence of public values in Claude Fayette Bragdon's essays on architecture, democracy and artistic expression. Writing as a practising architect, he argues that the structures a society produces reveal its habits of thought. His criticism of American cities turns on their displays of wealth, industrial power and borrowed styles. Alongside this social argument, the collection considers mathematical ornament, ceramics, symbols, education and the work of Louis Sullivan.
A discussion of light and color gives the book a different focus. Bragdon imagines an art that would train the eye as music trains the ear, and examines instruments designed to translate musical notes into colors. He also questions whether such direct translation gives a new art enough room to develop. Readers interested in design can trace how one architect connects everyday buildings with civic ideals and experiments in visual perception.
